Seven years ago when I moved to this area I was totally oblivious to what Lansing had to offer. I remember going for a long bike ride to explore the city and finding the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing (ISGL). I was ecstatic to find an islamic center so close to campus.
As I started attending services and social functions, I was surprised to notice how diverse the Lansing Muslim community was. There were people at the ISGL from all over the world. Most mosques in the southeastern Michigan are planned around Muslim communities. The mosques in Dearborn, Michigan have a strong Arab presence while the mosuqes in Troy and Rochester Hills have a predominantly South Asian attendance. Until then I hadn’t visited any American mosque with as much diversity.
